The Big Island has a wide variety of ecosystems ranging from an active volcano (or two - it looks like Mauna Loa may erupt again as well a Kilueaua), to snow capped peaks, to grassy cattle land, to lush rain forest, to desolate black lava fields, to its prime sport-fishing ocean.
The Kona area is dry and hot while the Hilo side is wet and lush. Beaches are not as plentiful as the other islands since Hawai'i is the newest island (still growing from the lava) and it takes a while for the wave action to create sand. |
